Nine suspects arrested for murder of Mexican police officers

MEXICO CITY, July 12 (Xinhua) -- Mexico's Federal Police said Monday that they have arrested nine suspects in connection with Sunday's murder of two police officers.

Those arrested work directly for Joaquin Guzman Loera who controls the Sinaloa drug cartel, Luis Cardenas Palomino, Mexican police coordinator for crime prevention intelligence, told a broadcast press conference, where the nine suspects were also presented to the public.

The arrests were made in the cities of Xalisco and Tepic, in the Pacific coast state of Nayarit. Previously, police arrested five men and a woman who are members of the Beltran Leyva cartel, a rival to the Sinaloa Cartel, charging them with kidnapping.

The Sinaloa cartel led by Guzman, alias "El Chapo" (Shorty), Tory burch shoes was based in the Mexican Pacific coast state of Sinaloa, and smuggles cocaine grown in South America through Mexican territory into the United States, which is the world's top market for the illicit drug.

Guzman escaped from prison in 2001, after spending eight years in a high security jail on drugs charges.

Since December 2006, at least 22,700 people have died in Mexico's drug-related clashes, and most of them were smugglers killed by rival gangs, according to Mexican government figures.
