WALTER SMITH has bossed Rangers through boom and bust - now Dave McPherson hopes he sticks around to see them back at their financial peak.

The former Gers defender won theTreble under Smith when the club were at the height of their nine-in-a-row powers.

He admired him as a boss then and that hasn't diminished now as he watches him gun for another full house of trophies.

Slim, with four League Cup winners'medals in his two spells at Ibrox, said: "Money-wise it's like night and day for Walter what he had then and what he has now.

"I look back to the team we had when we won back-to-back League Cups in 92 and 93, we felt like wholesale lingerie we were unbeatable.

"We went 10 games unbeaten in the Champions League, we won a treble and we won a double the following season.

"This is a different era and it's hard to compare them but he's such a good manager he copes with it, no matter what he has.

High "He can get the best out of all the players. He can put good teams together even if he doesn't have the best guy in every position.

"I hope he's still there next season.

"People have said the quality of the league's not that great this season but you still have to put a team on the park good enough to win every game and he does that better than anyone else.

"Talk of him leaving is down to the uncertainty over who's going to be in charge of the club.

"But if he's comfortable with the people who come in, why would he leave? "The only way he would is if he wants to go out on sexy high heels a high with a treble - but I hope he stays on."

McPherson won back-to-back League Cups twice at Gers, in the 80s and 90s - and the only player to play alongside him in all four finals is now the likely heir to Smith's throne.

The former Hearts and Gers star grinned: "I've seen Ally McCoist as a lot of things over the years but maybe not as Rangers manager!

"But then he's always talked a good game and he has the personality to carry it off."
