Divya bags natl youth title

Pune's international paddler Divya Deshpande added one more feather in her cap, as the India no. 3 player (youth) won the Indian Oil Servo National Ranking Table Tennis Championship (South Zone) at the Sree Kanteerava Indoor Stadium in Bangalore on Sunday.

In the summit clash of the youth category, second seed Divya defeated Nagpur's third seed Mallika Bhandarkar 4-2. Before that, she prevailed over Anushree Hazra of West Bengal in quarterfinals and Shruti Talnikar of Thane in semis.

"I am in a good form and have won the matches comfortably, except for the final where I lost two games to Mallika," said Divya, while speaking to DNA.

However, Divya couldn't repeat her performance in the women's category and her campaign ended in the second round when she lost to West Bengal's Sushmita Roy. "I am not satisfied with my performance, I feel I played badly. I still don't know where I went wrong but I just lost it," she said.

When asked how the performance will affect her chances of getting a berth in the Indian team for the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, she said, "Unfortunately the performance in the women's category is taken into consideration. But I still have some hopes. If I perform better in the Inter-Institute Tournament to be held in Ajmer from August 4, I think I have a chance." She added that almost all top-ranked players in the country participate in this tournament and it is rated as one of the toughest tournaments after the National Championship

The men's and women's singles titles that Petroleum Sports Promotion Board players Soumyadeep Roy and Poulomi Ghatak. Roy defeated Gujarat's Harmeet Desai 11-3, 11-5, 14-12, 8-11, 10-12, 11-7. Barring two games, in which Roy made more mistakes than he could afford, he was generally dominant against Desai. Roy was immaculate with some of his forehand top spins and they left his rival stunned. Desai could have given Roy a tougher time had he been less error prone. However, Desai had his moments and the best one was when he fought back from a 4-6 deficit in the fourth game and went to win it. But it was Roy's day and the Bengal paddler eventually prevailed.
