It's hard to believe that in a few short weeks school bells will be ringing again. Take the sting out of your back-to-school shopping budget next weekend during the tax-free shopping holiday.

Qualifying clothing less than $100 each, school supplies costing less off white ballet flats than $20 each and reference books and textbooks less than $20 each are exempt from sales tax during the weekend. Special rules apply to layaways, rain checks and special orders.

Some stores are offering huge savings on nontax items in order to lure in shoppers. The three-day exemption period begins Aug. 6 and ends Aug. 8. For a list of approved items, visit and click the sales tax holiday logo.
