My old boss is one in a millio

Byline: GORDON WADDEL

WALTER SMITH has bossed Rangers through boom and bust - now Dave McPherson hopes he sticks around to see them back at their financial peak.

The former Gers defender won theTreble under Smith when the club were at the height of their nine-in-a-row powers.

He admired him as a boss then and that hasn't diminished now as he watches him gun for another full house of trophies.

Slim, with four League Cup winners'medals in his two spells at Ibrox, said: "Money-wise it's like night and day for Walter what he had then and what he has now.

"I look back to the team we had when we won back-to-back League Cups in 92 and 93, we felt like wholesale lingerie we were unbeatable.

"We went 10 games unbeaten in the Champions League, we won a treble and we won a double the following season.

"This is a different era and it's hard to compare them but he's such a good manager he copes with it, no matter what he has.

High "He can get the best out of all the players. He can put good teams together even if he doesn't have the best guy in every position.

"I hope he's still there next season.

"People have said the quality of the league's not that great this season but you still have to put a team on the park good enough to win every game and he does that better than anyone else.

"Talk of him leaving is down to the uncertainty over who's going to be in charge of the club.

"But if he's comfortable with the people who come in, why would he leave? "The only way he would is if he wants to go out on sexy high heels a high with a treble - but I hope he stays on."

McPherson won back-to-back League Cups twice at Gers, in the 80s and 90s - and the only player to play alongside him in all four finals is now the likely heir to Smith's throne.

The former Hearts and Gers star grinned: "I've seen Ally McCoist as a lot of things over the years but maybe not as Rangers manager!

"But then he's always talked a good game and he has the personality to carry it off."

Legend in His Time

This excerpt from a new book on Robert Lougheed spotlights the painter's transition from illustrator to master western artist

Replica Gucci Watches

MOST MEN confront their own mortality for the first time around the age of fifty with the realization that, in all likelihood, more than half of their life is behind them. Bob Lougheed turned fifty in May, 1960. All things considered, he had every reason to be content with the hand that destiny had dealt him. [His wife] Cordy was part of it, of course, and the happiness of having a home and someone to share it with. Bob knew now that life involved more than only art. Cordy's companionship filled in the empty space that existed apart from the painting.

Bob valued his friends too, and especially John Clymer. By the 1960s, Bob and John were both acknowledged as among the elite of their generation of illustrators. John was only a couple of years older than Bob, and they had shared the same sort of struggles starting out and breaking into the business. Now they talked about the "old days," as middle-aged men do, and of how it would be, someday, when the time was right, to just leave it all behind for somewhere else and the freedom to paint for their own pleasure as the muse might move them. There was a lot of talk in the 1960s about "karma," and if there was really anything to it, Bob had the best kind.

In 1960, Bob was commissioned by National Geographic magazine to produce a series of thirteen paintings depicting various breeds of horses in America. This was a prestigious assignment, and Bob embraced it with enthusiasm. There was nothing he enjoyed painting more than horses. Included among the thirteen breeds involved in the assignment was the American Quarter Horse. National Geographic arranged for Bob to visit the historic Bell Ranch in northeastern New Mexico which was known for breeding outstanding examples of the Quarter Horse for its cowboys to ride.

The Bell Ranch encompassed 300,000 acres out of the original 700,000 acre Montoya land grant that traced back to Spanish colonial times in New Mexico. The ranch was named for a prominent bell-shaped butte that had served as a landmark since the days of conquistadors who had come in search of a fabled place called Cibola and its seven golden cities.

Bob was staggered by the sheer size of the ranch and the vastness of space and of sky. Mule deer and antelope grazed alongside herds of white-faced Hereford cattle at the mid and lower elevations on the ranch. There were said to be mountain lions farther up in the rugged high country, where eagles built their nests in the steep, rocky crags. And then there were the horses, lots and lots of horses, ranch hand remudas and brood mare bands in a rainbow array of colors - more horses than Bob had ever seen before, or even imagined, in one place at one time.

Cattle ranching in the west had changed hardly at all in almost one hundred years, and Bob might have believed he had wandered into another world and another time. His artistic instincts were stirred at the sight of a panorama of cattle and horses and men moving in a cloak of dust across a landscape uncluttered by any sign of modern civilization. It all seemed so different from the way western novels and movies had said it was. Bob knew he was seeing something special, something grand and on a scale that could not be translated into art in the ordinary manner. He came away from the Bell Ranch in the fall of 1960 with much more than the material for a horse picture for National Geographic. The way Bob saw it, "The west is too big to be confi

Time To Grow Up, Tosh Tells Yo

Byline: Chris Wathan

JOHN TOSHACK has begun the countdown to his final qualifying bid ... by telling his side it's time to deliver.

The Wales boss has previously hit out at former players turned pundits like Neville Southall, Ian Rush and Kevin Ratcliffe for saying his young team need to stand up and be counted.

He argued it was too soon to expect too much from his kids, pushed through after injuries and suspensions ruled out so many senior servants.

But now, with six months before the Euro campaign kicks-off, Tosh has admitted the time has come for his boys to become men and stand on their own two feet ahead of the Euros.

Wednesday's game against Sweden at the Liberty Stadium will mark the first of four friendlies before the qualifying campaign - the last of Tosh's tenure - starts in September.

And then it is time for the excuses to stop, with a challenge for a place in Poland and Ukraine simply a must.

Toshack has often tried to protect his young players. He adopted conservative tactics to avoid harsh lessons in the unforgiving world of international football and ensure fragile confidence was not having flopped in the last campaign, Toshack has now admitted: "It's time for them to stand on their own two feet.

"I said it to them after the game in Finland, they are young lads but most of them have 25 caps or so now - I can't protect them any longer.

"It's a case of off you go now. "I've been frightened before ...perhaps not frightened, but I've been aware that if you throw them in and get a walloping off somebody it can set them back more than just a couple of games. We couldn't afford that. Longines Replica Watches But in fairness, that hasn't happened and we've shown steps forward in the last two games. We know what happened in Finland, and although a series of circumstances didn't help, we had no complaints. We had chances to nick it but we didn't so that's it and we can't argue.

"That is done and gone now and we went on, scored five goals from the last two game with a young side and it's showed this is the way for us.

"Yes they are young but they have to stand on their two feet and it's off you go."

It's strong stuff from Tosh who has previously been almost apologetic for his youngsters finding their feet on the biggest stage. The veteran manager was admittedly hamstrung by having to introduce a new Replica Seiko Watches generation almost en masse.

But Toshack clearly feels it's now time to cut the apron strings after seeing so many of the young guns fire.

shattered.

But Some of the teenagers who have made their debut under Toshack are not exactly rookies any longer; Wayne Hennessey is now a Premier League goalkeeper, Chris Gunter an ever-present in Nottingham Forest's top-flight push, Jack Collison a big league star and Aaron Ramsey one of the most talked-about players in British football with Champions League games to his name.

Joe Ledley - although injured for this clash - is a veteran of 32 caps, Lewin Nyatanga an old head of 30 international appearances - even this nation's youngest ever goalscorer, Gareth Bale, has 23 outings to his name.

It's not to say Wales should be the finished article yet - but it's enough to suggest the supporters can expect more when the competitive actions g

TIME TO KO HAYE

THERE is a knockout bill of top-class European football this week that will have me glued to the telly watching Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool and Fulham.

But I'll be ducking David Haye Sexy Costumes (below) and his World Heavyweight title defence against John Ruiz on Sky Box Office next Saturday night on principle.

My combined Sky/ ESPN monthly bill has soared to pounds 77.50- amonth and I believe for that kind of outlay there shouldn't be any need to fork out extra cash for subscription sports events such as the Haye fight.

Sky Box Office is the only place you can see Britain's latest heavyweight champion in action and for that it'll cost you pounds 14.95p booking via your Sky remote.

Pick up the phone to order and it jumps to pounds 15.95p. Outrageous.

As a great fan of the heavyweight division I would love to see the Haye fight live, but I am afraid it is time to make a stand against Sky's relentless profiteering.

Bismarck-Mandan's favorite thi

One of Bismarck-Mandan's true treasures will be given some high- quality historic polish.

Work is expected to begin this spring on a $52 million, 97,000- square-foot addition to the North Dakota Heritage Center. We're talking about room enough to contain a 40-foot-long replica of a fossilized tyrannosaurus rex fighting a 30-foot-long replica of a fossilized triceratops. Move over, Godzilla.

It's to be the "Smithsonian on the Prairie." And the work is to be completed by 2014, the 125th year of North Dakota statehood.

Accutron Replica Watches

There's to be a First Peoples Gallery, Geological Times Gallery, Governors Gallery, and the Inspiration, Opportunities and Innovator Gallery, as well as a 3-D theater.

Already a local treasure, the expansion will take the Heritage Center to the next level. Private funds will make up about $12 million of the total cost, with the state Legislature funding the rest. Work could not start until the first $6 million in private money was raised.

The Heritage Center isn't the only local treasure.

Bismarck-Mandan is home to Fort Lincoln and the Mandan Indian villages, and a short distance away is the reconstructed Fort Mandan and the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center. Together, they capture the pre-settlement and early American exploration years of this area.

In the vein of history and heritage, a newly constructed conference center has opened in Medora, in the heart of the North Dakota Badlands. Hopes are to expand the number of hotel rooms at the conference center in 2010, so that it can offer a 365-day-a- year experience. But the real treasures are the rough sand, clay and lignite hills along the Little Missouri River in the Badlands.

Back in Bismarck-Mandan, another river, the big Missouri River, has created its own remarkable culture. Its banks are lined with recreation trails and boat ramps. The public access makes the river and its sandbars and bank an outdoor theme park. Then there are its dams - Oahe and Garrison, backing up water for fishing, sailing and other water sports. And crossing its broad water is the newly constructed Memorial Bridge, a modern reconstruction completed in 2009.

The Dakota Zoo has grown into a remarkable community feature for local residents and visitors. The addition of a "big cat" space last IWC Watches year has made the zoo experience even more enjoyable.

Bismarck-Mandan also offers the McQuade's Softball Tournament - the largest nonprofit, slow-pitch softball tournament held over one weekend in the United States. The two cities fill with athletes of all ages, genders and skill levels.

This is home to the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Belle Mehus Auditorium, Buckstop Junction and, of course, the state capital.

Western North Dakota reflects gems all around.

In the mid 90's, laser therapies were introduced, making hair removal safer and easier than ever before.

GAME FOR ANYTHING

AT FIRST I didn't believe it.

AWas Neil LaBute really involving himself with a PlayStation 3 game? The mordant American made his name writing chilling plays such as In the Company of Men and The Mercy Seat, which explored the very worst that nice, apparently normal people are capable of. His darkness is evident in the films he has directed, such as Nurse Betty, Replica IWC Watches or his misconceived remake of The Wicker Man. Surely that commercial and critical disaster hadn't reduced him to playing with pixels for a living? Well, no, not exactly. Sony's Heavy Rain for PS3, written and directed by Harry Cage, marks a step forward in gaming. The graphics have a downbeat realism to them but it is in the emotional field that the game is most innovative. Instead of randomly blasting aliens, the player is required to investigate a serial killer who preys on children. The moral choices your character makes alter the outcome of the game as much as your skill in beating up bad guys.

LaBute's involvement amounts to a supporting eight-minute documentary entitled How Far Would You Go ...? It consists of a series of talking heads, including film directors Nicolas Roeg and Stephen Frears and actor-producer Samuel L Jackson, responding to the central question of how far they'd go for love (in Jackson's case, the answer is "not very"). Each talking head then discusses how much the emotions of love and hate inform their work. The responses are sometimes surprising, sometimes funny, sometimes touching: film director Peter Bogdanovich sings, while writer Hanif Kureshi agonises over whether he would kill to save a loved one.

LaBute considers his film "a supplemental exploration of the game's themes". He says he was attracted to the project because the notion of the "boundaries we put on love" touched issues in his own work, and because it gave him the chance to examine the creative processes of people he admired, both former collaborators and long- term heroes.

"It's a humanising thing, like getting a glimpse behind the curtain in The Wizard of Oz," he explains. "You get to see that Samuel L Jackson is just a person -- a gifted person but otherwise no different from the rest of us. Also, I'd never done anything like this before, and that always interests me." (For the record, he has directed two commercials, for footwear company Airwalk, in Bedat & Co Watches the past.) LaBute is not a committed gamer himself, beyond having played the odd fatherly session of Super Mario when his son Spencer, now 18, was growing up. But he can see how the film and gaming worlds are converging.

Heavy Rain aims for a more realistic look in the skin tone and eye-movement of its characters. Meanwhile, films like Avatar, and the motion-capture animations of Robert Zemeckis, are making film actors more like figures in a game. Movies such as Resident Evil are now derived from video games, while action films are plotted with at least half an eye on a playable spinoff.

It's hard to see that happening with LaBute's own, psychologically complex, character-driven dramas, "but if DVD sales continue to fall, it's logical that companies will look for other ways, like that, to make revenue", he says. "And I can imagine a good director might want to get involved in a game [based on a movie] in the same way they would get involved with the soundtrack, or with a novelisation of the script."

So how far Replica Audemars Piguet Watches would he go for love? "Pretty far," he says, amiably. "I think we all have the capacity t

Game changer

Just outside Guildford, in a threestorey red brick building, a collection of people - many of them fat, almost all of them bleary- eyed and anaemic - are slumped in front of their desks, staring at computer screens. It is quiet. Nobody moves much. But there is a definite sense of purpose in the air. For almost three years now, these men and women have been busy reinventing the video game.

At first, their project was only known by the code name 'Dimitri', then'Project X'.And then, last year, Peter Molyneux, the legendary games designer and founder of Lionhead Studios, where these employees reside, divulged some details. The new game, the first to be developed for Microsoft's radical 'Natal' system, which uses the human body as a controller, was to be called Milo. Even in the environs of E3, a trade show sexy high heels for people who devote their lives to video games, it caused a huge stir.

Molyneux had developed a character, an eight-year-old boy, who behaved more like a human being than any other computer character in history. In a demonstration, the eponymous Milo was able to recognise a player's face, his voice, and, most incredibly, his emotions. If the player sounded sad, Milo would ask:'What's wrong?' If the player smiled, Milo would smile back.

And if the player told Milo a joke, he would laugh. The boy even made a distinction between a good joke and a bad one; laughing heartily at the former and only politely at the latter.

'This is new technology that science fiction has not even written about,' Molyneux declared at the time.'And this works today. Now.' In fact, Lionhead is still working hard to complete Milo. The release date is a closely guarded secret and many in the games industry are reserving judgment until they have a copy in their hands. But, only three years after Nintendo's Wii console got us all dancing, skiing or playing ersatz instruments in front of the television, Molyneux has come up with a concept that promises to take the interactive experience to a new level. If he's successful, Milo will do something that has never been done before: he will make us care about a computer character.

Peter Molyneux is something of a guru in the video games industry. Twenty years ago he designed a game - Populous - that challenged all the existing assumptions about video games and created a new genre - the 'God game' - in which the player was in complete control. In 2001, Molyneux created more shock waves with Black &White, a game that sold more than two million copies. When Molyneux says he's had a good idea, people sit up and take note.

Not that the industry is in any sense flagging. In 2008, sales in Britain broke the Pounds 4billion barrier for the first time and last November gamers cocked a snook at the recession by queuing in their thousands to buy Call of Duty:ModernWarfare 2,a firstperson war game that sold more than a million copies in its first week.

So, it might sound surprising to hear that there are people working night and day to make games even more compelling. But the industry does not look at the percentage of households that have a games console. It's more obsessed with the percentage that don't.

That equation has improved significantly in favour of the manufacturers in recent years, thanks to the Wii and the advent of more family-friendly games for the other two popular consoles, the Sony PlayStation and the Xbox 360.
